A legend persists in Bělá pod Bezdězem that an underground passage leads from house no. 27 on the square all the way to the castle, though it is now blocked in many places. Various authors mention it, including Schaller in his 1786 Topography of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Its entrance was supposedly later walled up in the cellar of that house. The tradition of a secret passage inspired E. Krásnohorská, whose libretto B. Smetana set as the opera The Secret.
